Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, on May 26, 1907. He moved to California with his family as a child, and he began working in the film industry in the early 1930s. Wayne's first major role was in the 1939 film Stagecoach, which was directed by John Ford. Ford and Wayne would go on to collaborate on many other classic Westerns, including The Searchers (1956) and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962).
Wayne's career was interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war, he returned to Hollywood and continued to star in Westerns. In the 1950s and 1960s, Wayne became one of the most popular actors in the world. He starred in a number of blockbuster films, including Rio Bravo (1959),The Alamo (1960),and True Grit (1969).
Wayne continued to act until his death in 1979. He was 72 years old. Wayne is considered one of the greatest actors of all time, and his films continue to be enjoyed by audiences around the world.
